Circus Sessions (now in it’s 3nd season) is a weeklong creative laboratory and think-tank that will offer 12 contemporary circus artists the opportunity to work with internationally renowned UK mentor Sean Gandini (www.gandinijuggling.com) in The Harbourfront Centre Theatre.

Artists are selected via an open call.

The selection committee is comprised of Holly Treddenick (Femmes du Feu), Lynanne Sparrow (Harbourfront Centre), Brandy Leary (CCAFT & Anandam Dance Theatre) and Rebecca Leonard (CCAFT & A Girl In The Sky Productions).
This initiative is open to the diverse forms of practice that span the five families of circus: Aerial, Acrobatics, Balancing, Object Manipulation and Clown. The Circus Sessions looks to encourage artists to engage in a creative dialogue that examines their evolving form, cultivates experimentation in performance, as well as networking, advocacy and audience development and engagement strategies.

Circus Sessions addresses a need for peer-to-peer research and development, a space for improvisation, new collaborations and a deconstruction of vocabulary, in the field of contemporary circus in Canada. Initiated in 2015 by Holly Treddenick with Lynanne Sparrow and Harbourfront Centre, we aim to have Circus Sessions a yearly event.

Circus Sessions understands the importance, and difficulty, of time taken outside the pressures of production-driven work as a way to open space and time to reflect on one’s current practice and to envision, through play, dialogue, experimentation, new artistic possibilities.
